A Walk Through Sunnyside, Portland

Sunnyside is one of SE Portland’s most popular neighborhoods that offers a small, hometown feel. Located between SE Stark Street and SE Hawthorne Blvd., and from SE 28th Ave. to SE 49th Ave., Sunnyside offers a “pure Portland” experience with many locally owned coffee shops, businesses and restaurants.

About Portland’s Sunnyside Neighborhood

Walkable, bikeable Sunnyside is often referred to by Portland locals as Belmont because of its main commercial street running through the heart of the neighborhood from east to west. There are many large and brightly painted Victorians homes in Sunnyside that have been lovingly restored, providing the neighborhood with charm and personality.

Many residents walk and bike to run errands or visit Belmont, while others work in their front gardens, giving Sunnyside a warm sense of community.

Peacock Lane, running north and south between Stark and Belmont, is a street known locally for elaborate Christmas decorations and displays each December.

Shopping and Entertainment in Sunnyside

The neighborhood is perhaps most famous for being the home of the Bagdad Theatre, a movie palace built in 1927 by Universal Studios. The neighborhood’s identity is shaped by young, liberal residents, pedestrian-friendly, high-density mixed-use development and stately character homes.

The Movie Madness Museum, housed in a movie rental store, contains over 100 pieces of memorabilia from classic movies such as Blade Runner, Citizen Kane and the Sound of Music.

The Avalon Theatre and nickel arcade is Portland’s oldest operating movie theater.
